Preserving Sang Hyang

The sacred Sang Hyang ritual was once discontinued and only revived in 1967 after the eruption of Mount Agung. However, during the 1970s, it was once again forgotten due to the introduction of ‘high-yield rice varieties’, which replaced the traditional ‘seasonal rice’ in the village. Eventually, in the 1990s, as harvests declined and farmers began to run out of options, they desperately called upon Sang Hyang to return to earth.
Desa Adat Geriana Kauh continues to preserve the sacred Sang Hyang rituals to this day, including Sang Hyang Dedari and Sang Hyang Jaran. In 2018, the Sang Hyang Dedari Giri Amertha Museum was established with support from the Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia. This year, the ritual will be held every night on April 24, April 27, and May 3, 2025, in Desa Adat Geriana Kauh.
To witness this important ritual, which takes place from 8:00 PM until midnight, Jero Tumbuk invites all culture enthusiasts to contact us for accommodation arrangements, as the venue is only a 3-minute drive from Jero Tumbuk. Visitors can also enjoy other enriching experiences such as culture dinners, cooking classes, mandala healing, and more.
